The Reason I Bought a Woodburner

The Reason I Bought a Woodburner

I could start off by telling you why you should buy a wood burning stove and the many advantages that come with the ownership; the problem with that is, nobody is realistic, everyone focuses on nothing but money. There is more to life than just money and that is one thing having a family has taught me.

Personally, if I had the choice between memories and money, I would opt for memories each and every time and that's one thing my wood stove has supplied me with.

I've vacationed in several exotic countries and whilst I have fond memories of all of these places with beautiful sunsets, there's something homely and safe about curling up in front of the stove with loved ones which nothing else can replace.

It makes it feel like a proper home

One of the most common questions I find people can never manage to answer is "what makes a house a home?" While the same answer won't apply to everyone, having a blazing fire roaring in the living room certainly meant I'd never have to stop and think about that question again.

I've met people who claim personal possessions, pictures and adding your 'own touch' to a house makes it feel more like a home. Now, I agree with this as my house had all of these things before a stove, but I never really felt at home (as cliché as that sounds).

Yet within days of installing a wood burner, that changed. I felt a passion for our home that I'd never felt before; a strange sensation that had me thinking about it every single day. Why?

I couldn't tell you if I'm honest. It could be a primitive feeling that emerges from creating your own heat source, coupled with the dancing flames or it might just be the stunning looks (everyone's a sucker for a beautiful stove).

It sounds too perfect!

It does, but I'm going to be brutally honest in this seemingly pro-wood burner babbling and actually explain that the maintenance of a stove can be quite hard work. I say hard, but it's just a matter of doing your research and knowing what needs to be done, how often and the costs involved to ensure you don't get ripped off.

For example, you'll need your chimney lined when installing a stove and you'll need that same chimney cleaning at least once a year due to the deposits that inevitably build up over time.

On top of this, having somewhere to store wood is a necessity; preferably a nice dedicated outdoor space, unless of course you don't mind lumbering (excuse the pun) a spare bedroom with all the wood.

However, all of these small inconveniences and things you need to take into account are simply pushed to the back of your mind the first time you light your stove.

Gather the family around and watch as the small embers grow into a miniature bonfire in your living room (sadly, fireworks aren't included) and it soon becomes clear as to why these are one of the most popular additions to newly built homes.

I hope sharing my experience with my precious wood burner has ignited an interest in them and better yet, if writing this inspires just one person to go out and buy a wood burning stove, then the last 35 minutes I have spent in front of the computer frantically typing away won't be without cause.
